Week 19 recap: Explosive scoring in the 14U Major division

SEWELL, N.J — There was no shortage of offensive firepower in the 14U Major division this week, as these young players put their skills on display. The abundance of points yielded several exciting games, including a huge upset that will rock the entire division to its core.

WB/Scranton Jr. Knights vs. Philadelphia Hockey Club (Premier)

The Philadelphia Hockey Club (PHC) notched what was perhaps their signature win of the season when the knocked off the first place WB/Scranton Jr. Knights in a thrilling showdown. PHC hit the ground running and never looked back, scoring twice in the waning moments of the first period to take a quick 2-0 lead. When the Knights scored a powerplay goal in the second period, PHC responded in kind to make it a 3-1 game. They were able to add another goal in the first five minutes of the third to extend their lead to 4-1. Although the Knights were able to add two late goals in the third period to keep things close, PHC was able to hang on and secure an enormous win for their club.

Long Island Royals vs. Philadelphia Junior Flyers (Premier)

This titanic clash featured the second place Royals taking on the third place Junior Flyers. Both teams knew that this game could go a long way towards determining the playoff seeding come March. The Flyers jumped out to a huge lead early in the contest when they scored a whopping three goals in the first period alone. The Royals were able to add on a goal of their own, and another in the opening minutes of the second period, but they struggled to keep up with the Flyers’ breakneck pace. Things went from bad to worse for the Royals when the Flyers were able to extend their lead to 4-2 in the opening minutes of the third. It was almost as if a fire was lit under the Royals, as they played absolutely lights out for the remainder of the period. They scored four unanswered goals while completely shutting the Flyers out. By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Royals had not only completed their comeback, but they won by two, 6-4.

Washington Little Capitals vs. New Jersey Jr. Titans (Premier)

The Washington Little Capitals took care of business against the New York Jr. Titans, defeating them 5-1. They got a huge lift from Brayden Godon, who accounted for a goal in each period. This was a hugely important win for the Caps to bank, as they’re currently three wins behind the fourth place PHC, which means that if the season ended today, they’d be on the outside of the playoff picture. If they’re going to qualify, stacking wins will be hugely important.
