Former Little Cap Looking to make NHL Debut
Stephen Warner looking to establish himself in AHL and then make the big move
August 21, 2008

Former Washington Little Capital, Stephen Werner has a pretty good chance of suiting up in a black and gold sweater for the Washington Capitals this season.  After being drafted in 2003 as a freshman at UMass, the past five years have been nothing but hard work for Werner.

Werner began his career as Washington Little Capital in youth hockey and continued on to play for the Junior Capitals.  He then went onto National USA Hockey festivals and then made the U.S. under 17 team.  From their he took nothing less than the high road.  He went to play college hockey at UMass where he was then drafted by the Washington Capitals.  Werner was the first D.C. native to ever be drafted in the NHL.

His first American Hockey League games came with the Hershey Bears.  He then went to the Springfield Falcons where he became more comfortable and started to score more goals.  It was a big step for Werner making the transition from college to pro, but the right step.

“I want to establish myself as a top player in the American League and give myself a chance to play some NHL games,” Werner said.  If he keeps producing like he did towards the end of last season, we will be seeing him in a Capitals uniform very early this season.
